Library Now Offering Mango Languages!

The Library now offers Mango Languages for free, easy and fun foreign language learning.

The Winooski Memorial Library has added Mango Languages to its growing list of patron resources. Mango is free of charge to all Winooski Memorial Library members and is the easiest and most effective way to learn to speak a foreign language. Mango is available in two versions:

Mango Basic:
Perfect for a foreign language beginner, Mango Basic teaches everyday greetings, gratitudes, goodbyes and helpful phrases in a short period of time. The courses, which require only two to five hours of time to complete, are currently available in 34 foreign languages and 15 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

You can view all the supported Mango Basic languages and ESL courses here

Mango Complete:
Mango Complete offers a 100-lesson course that digs much deeper and is designed to provide a more complete understanding of the entire language and culture. It is available in 31 foreign language and 14 ESL courses. Foreign language courses include Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. ESL courses include Polish, Spanish and Portuguese.

At our library, we always try to have a box of children's books that are available for kids to take home to own. These books are often ones that have been discarded from the library collection or donated and we aren't able to use them in the collection. Encourage the kids you know to visit us! :)

Winooski Read & Rove Summer Challenge 2010

This summer we are trying out a pilot of a fantastic new summer program for kids and families called "Winooski Read & Rove Summer Challenge." The goal of this program is to provide a fun way for kids and families to engage in reading and get outside to participate in community activities.

Unlike a traditional summer reading program, there are many options to earn "points," including visiting community parks and landmarks, swimming at the pool, attending a community potluck, posting to Front Porch Forum, and of course reading in many different forms! Completing activities and earning points allows participants to enter to win great prizes!

We have had many wonderful prizes donated from these local businesses: Quiznos, Peking Duck House, The Woolen Mill Health Club, Asian Bistro, Papa Franks, Vermont Lake Monsters, and the Physician's Computer Company.

Come to the library after June 1 to pick up a scorecard for your family, and spread the word to friends and neighbors! The scorecard can also be downloaded from the library's page at www.onioncity.com

Ice Skating in Winooski!

This came from the Public Works Director:

The City now has two outdoor public ice skating rinks open in Winooski. The first rink is located in the parking lot at Landry Field and the second is a brand new rink that we constructed in the green space along the west side of the Champlain Mill. Both rinks have limited lighting for night skating. The ice is great, get out and enjoy!

What was the best book your read this summer?

Made from Scratch: Discovering the Pleasures of a Handmade Life by Jenna Woginrich was mine. Woginrich decides to live a more simple existence. A web-designer by day and a homesteader in her spare time, she learns a few basic skills and rebels against out-of-control consumerism. The path to self-sufficiency isn't always easy, and what I appreciated most was that there were mistakes along the way.

My husband says his favorite read was Hawke by Ted Bell. It's the first in a series of adventures about Alex Hawke, a character similar to Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne.

ECHO Center and Vermont State Parks Passes Available at the Library!

You can now borrow passes for entry at the ECHO Center and for day use at Vermont State Parks from the Winooski Memorial Library!

The ECHO Center pass allows two adults and three youth entry for $2.00 per admission. The pass is available for Winooski residents only. It can be checked out for two days.

The "Check Out the Parks Pass" admits one vehicle holding up to eight people FREE to any Vermont State Park's Day Use Area for one day. The pass is available to Winooski residents only. There is a three day loan period.

Enjoy these passes this summer! The Vermont State Parks pass has been provided by the Vermont Department of Forest and Park and the Vermont Department of Libraries.

Worst Reads of 2008

I came across this list which lead to others. In general, I have to agree that I love to hear about books people didn't like. Usually the reactions are so much stronger than to the ones they love. My least favorite reads of 2008 were The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kimberly Edwards and Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.

We're seeing increases here in Winooski as well! The newscast focuses predominately on books, but remember we have books, videos, music, and audiobooks (cassette, CD and downloadable!) If we don't have it, we can usually get it through Interlibrary loan as well!

The 2008-2009 Green Mountain Books Awards nominees have been announced. The Green Mountain Book Award is a reader's choice award for students in grades 9-12. The award is co-sponsored by the Vermont School Library Association, Vermont Library Asssociation and the Vermont Department of Libraries, this program is designed to introduce high school students to some excellent books for pleasure reading.

Red Clover Nominees Announced

The Red Clover Award is a Vermont children's choice picture book program for children in Kindergarten through fourth grade. The Red Clover Award is given annually to one of ten picture book nominated by a committee comprised of teachers and librarians and voted on by Vermont children. DCF Award Nominees Announced
The Dorothy Canfield Fisher award, a Vermont children’s choice award, was first given in 1957. The award was created to honor quality literature for children. After reading at least five titles from the list, children may vote for their favorites the following spring.
